State AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAPs)

AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAPs), authorized under Title II of the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act, operate in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. They provide HIV-related prescription drugs to underinsured and uninsured individuals living with HIV/AIDS. For many people with HIV, ADAPs serve as a gateway to a broad array of healthcare and supportive services funded through the CARE Act and to other sources of coverage including Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance. In addition to filling gaps in prescription drug coverage, ADAPs often function as the only source of HIV-related medications for those who are underinsured or uninsured.

The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) commissions the National ADAP Monitoring Project and conducts it in partnership with the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) and the AIDS Treatment Data Network (ATDN). The information presented here were collected from the 2002 National ADAP Survey. Every effort is made to keep the information current.
